Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver hit WCU
SMN

Ticket sales started Sept. 6, for an upcoming concert by bluegrass giants Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver at Western Carolina University’s Ramsey Regional Activity Center.

The bill for the Mountain Heritage Day Spotlight Concert, set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, also will include bluegrass up-and-comers the Steep Canyon Rangers.

A native of eastern Tennessee, Lawson is a legendary mandolinist who spent the early part of his career performing with bluegrass luminaries J.D. Crowe, Jimmy Martin and the Country Gentlemen. In 1981, Lawson formed his own group, Quicksilver, which has earned wide acclaim over the years for standard-setting musicianship and harmonies.

The Steep Canyon Rangers was founded five years ago on the campus on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The group is winning rave reviews for its synergy of new and traditional bluegrass sounds.

General admission tickets are $15 in advance and at the door. Western students may purchase tickets in advance for $10.

Mountain Heritage Day, Western’s annual celebration of mountain culture, will kick off for the 31st time just after sunrise on Saturday, Sept. 24. The daylong festival features a wide variety of traditional music.
