Salaries not what some seem to think

To the editor:

The article in last week’s newspaper about the proposed charter school in Swain County contained a quote by proposed Mountain Discovery Charter School chairperson Mary Ellen Hammond which said: “A couple of assistant principals who make $60,000 per year might be impacted.”

As one of the two assistant principals in Swain County, I’d like to know where she gets her erroneous information — as I make nowhere near that. Nor does the other A.P. in the county. In fact, my 12-month salary is less than 75 percent of the amount Ms. Hammond mentioned.

Also, Swain County’s football program is not only self-supporting, but helps to support several other athletic programs, such as volleyball and soccer. If she is criticizing the supplements paid to coaches, there has NEVER been a group of people who work more hours for less pay.
