‘Make a Difference Day’ comes to HCC

SMN

HCC Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and Phi Theta Kappa will host the “Make a Difference Day” seminar at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, in the HCC auditorium.

The “Make a Difference Day” seminar is a free event sponsored by USA Weekend magazine in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center Nation Network. The project, “Ethics in the Health Industry and Options,” will focus on ethics in the health field and health care issues, which affect the aging population.

The keynote speaker will be Dennis W. Streets, chief of the Planning, Budget and Systems Support Section of the Division of Aging for N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Streets will speak about current trends that affect the aging.

The Haywood County Health Department will discuss services available to citizens through their local agency. There will also be representatives from the Haywood County Literacy Council.

HCC Medical Assistant and Nursing program students, as well as representatives from the Haywood Regional Medical Center and Haywood Regional Fitness Center will provide health screening and information.

SIFE and Phi Theta Kappa members will be collecting teddy bears for the N.C. Highway Patrol’s Teddy Bear Program during the month of October to present at the seminar. The collection will be dedicated to the former local contact for Operation Teddy Bear in Western North Carolina, Trooper Calvin Taylor, who was killed in the line of duty.
