Sylva man races to raise money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

SMN

Hospital Hill Pharmacy’s Eddie Lee of Sylva will participate in a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as a Team In Training member. The marathon will be held on Kiawah Island in South Carolina on Dec. 14. This marks the 25th anniversary of the marathon, which is a precursor to the Boston Marathon.

In December 2000, Lee and his wife, Johelen, fought through ankle and knee injuries to complete the marathon in honor of Deiah Haddock, a friend from church. Haddock, 15, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in April 2000.

This year, Lee will be honoring Haddock and Kelly Huffman, 6, the Western North Carolina Team in Training designated honoree, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in July 1999. Her chemotherapy will also be completed in December.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Nearly one million volunteers from all walks of life give generously of their time and talents to implement the Society’s programs.

According to Lee, for every dollar raised, 75 cents goes directly into research for a cure. Lee’s goal is to raise $2000 for the society.
