Birds:

°Adult male rufous hummingbird at a feeder in Hendersonville. To view the bird call Robert and Linda Newport at 828.692.0503, (reported from Carolina birds listserv 9/27)

° Below is a list of birds recorded from the Carolina Field Birders Club 9/28 field trip. Stops included various points along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Caesars Head State Park in SC and Hooper’s Lane in Henderson County.

° Tennessee warbler, bay-breasted warbler, chestnut-sided warbler, ovenbird, palm warbler, Cape May warbler, rose-breasted grosbeak, Swainson’s thrush, gray-cheeked thrush, wood thrush, scarlet tanager, eastern wood pewee and common raven were the best finds from a socked-in BRP.

° Broad-winged hawk, Cooper’s hawk, red-tailed hawk, American kestrel, peregrine falcon, bald eagle, osprey and black vulture at Casears Head hawk watch.

° Northern harrier, killdeer, common snipe, bobolink, palm warbler, common yellowthroat, Wilson’s warbler, barn swallow, tree swallow and savannah sparrow from Hooper’s Lane.


Wildflowers:

° Grass-of-Parnassus, Parnassia asarifolia; closed gentian, Gentianella quinquefolia and nodding ladies’ tresses (reported last week from Wolf Mountain OL along the BRP are still in bloom, recorded from Carolina Field Birders 9/28 field trip)

° Hedge bindweed, Calystegia sepium (Roy Taylor OL along BRP,from CFB 9/28 field trip)


Dragonflies:

° Common whitetail, eastern amberwing, yellow-legged meadowhawk (Hooper’s Lane, from CFB 9/28 field trip)


Butterflies:

° Pipevine swallowtail, common buckeye, gulf fritillary and clouded sulphur -white form (Lake Junaluska 9/29, Don Hendershot)
