| << Back 10/30/02 European folk ensemble performs in Montreat SMN The Montreat Conference Center, the Montreat Scottish Society, and the Black Mountain Center for the Arts are co-sponsoring a performance by the Duquesne University Tamburitzans on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. in the Anderson Auditorium in Montreat. The Tamburitzans are a well-known folk ensemble that performs music, song, and dances from Eastern Europe and neighboring cultures. The Tamburitzans were founded in 1937 at Duquesne University, which is located in Pittsburgh. The 400-member company come from all corners of the U.S., Canada, and Eastern Europe. All the Tamburitzans are full-time, full-scholarship Duquesne students, chosen for the company on the basis of talent in music and dance as well as academic achievement. Glenn Bannerman, a lifelong folkdance teacher and Tamburitzans enthusiast who lives in Montreat, has been instrumental in bringing the troupe to Montreat for its second visit to Western North Carolina in recent years. The reason I like to help bring the Tammies here is that its so rare to find a university that gives full scholarships in the arts, making that area as important as athletics, said Bannerman. Ticket prices are $10 per adult (age 12 and over); $5 per child (age 5-11); and no charge for children age 4 and under. Family maximum cost is $30. Groups of 20 or more receive a 10-percent discount.
