William Whittaker, 15, of Canton, has qualified to run in the USATF
National Junior Olympics (5 kilometer, cross country).
Whitaker placed eighth in the 15- and 16-year-old state championships
held Nov. 3 in Greensboro. He competed again on Nov. 17 in Cary in the
Region III Championships against runners from Georgia, South Carolina,
Virginia, North Carolina and District of Columbia and placed 18th. The
top 20 runners, including Whitaker, qualified to compete at the National
Junior Olympics to be held in Lincoln, Neb., on Dec. 8. Whitaker is
a member of the Asheville Lightning Cross Country Running Team.
