The voices of the rally

SMN

Looking out from my vantage point, there are people as far as I can see in every direction. There are more than 100,000 of us here, and we just got word that there are still buses coming from all over the country on the highway. We have shut D.C. down!

— Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, March organizer and member of International ANSWER (Act Now To Stop War and End Racism)

Here in this country, our fundamentalism is business. Violence escalates violence. This [the rally] is what democracy looks like! And WE are the majority!

— Susan Sarandon

The people, united, will never be defeated. The people, united, will never be defeated ....

— crowd chant

The sun is out! It doesn’t rain on the righteous! Use your voice! Let your voice be heard! People have the power! (She sings“People Have The Power” to guitar accompaniment as crowd sings along) .... The power to dream/to rule/to wrestle the world from fools/it’s decreed the people rule/it’s decreed the people rule/I believe everything we dream/can come to pass through our union/we can turn the world around/we can turn the earth’s revolution/we have the power/People have the power. People have the power....

— Patti Smith

“We’re bombing Iraq, now, every day. One and a half million people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Iraq since Desert Storm. Slaughter with impunity is a war crime — a crime against humanity. An impeachable offense. We’re destroying international law, the United Nations and the Constitution of the United States. They’re trying to put an end to individual freedoms. The regime change needs to begin at home. Let’s liberate this country from corporate oligarchy. They are running the government and the media. Respect for the rights of others is peace.

— Former Attorney General Ramsey Clarke

We know that when good people do nothing, evil triumphs — and that is why we are all here today. Something is terribly, terribly wrong in our government. Remember Florida! You, here, are the TRUE patriots – and are standing up for what is good about this country.

— Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney
