Two public access Internet sites open

SMN

Haywood County has opened two public access computer sites that offer offering citizens free computer and Internet access.

The centers, located at the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce at 1482 Russ Ave (near Kmart) and in the Maggie Valley Library, were funded in part through a $12,000 grant from the e-NC Initiative, a statewide effort to connect all North Carolinians to the Internet and a better future. Haywood County’s e-communities effort, led by Rick Honeycutt, spearheaded the creation of the chamber site and higher speed service at the Maggie Valley Library site. A third site is being developed at the Haywood Regional Medical Center for visitors and patients of the hospital. This site should be running by Nov. 15.

The chamber site is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The Maggie Valley site is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Haywood County developed initial plans for the site this past spring as part of local efforts to put together a strategic plan to bring greater high-speed Internet access and training to Haywood County.

“These public access sites will provide an excellent resource to our citizens and visitors to access information,” said Honeycutt.
