Birds:

From a quick trip to Brazos Bend State Park, about 40 miles southwest of Houston. Several factor led to a rather low species list – waterfowl haven’t arrived in numbers yet; recent flooding left many trails closed; and a constant 20 m.p.h. wind kept birds close to cover.

° Pied-billed grebe, double-crested cormorant, great egret, snowy egret, little blue heron, white ibis, black vulture, turkey vulture, black-bellied whistling duck, snow goose, Ross’ goose, gadwall, blue-winged teal, northern harrier, sharp-shinned hawk, red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawk, American kestrel, common moorhen, American coot, sandhill crane, Caspian tern, mourning dove, red-bellied woodpecker, yellow-bellied sapsucker, downy woodpecker, pileated woodpecker, eastern phoebe, scissor-tailed flycatcher, loggerhead shrike, tree swallow, ruby-crowned kinglet, blue-gray gnatcatcher, Tennessee warbler, orange-crowned warbler, yellow-rumped warbler, black-throated green warbler, pine warbler, common yellowthroat, chipping sparrow, song sparrow, swamp sparrow and great-tailed grackle (11/10, Don Hendershot)

° American pipit, Lapland longspur, Lincoln’s sparrow and Baird’s sandpiper (Hooper’s Lane in Henderson County, 11/10, reported from Carolina birds listserv)

° Black scoter (Lake Hickory behind Oxford Dam, 10/8, reported from Carolina Birds listserv)

Butterflies:

° Cloudless sulphur, little yellow, Gulf fritillary, common buckeye, viceroy, Carolina satyr and long-tailed skipper (Brazos Bend State Park, 11/10, Don Hendershot)


Dragonflies:

° Green darner and hyacinth skimmer (B.B. State park, 11/10, Don Hendershot)
