Fellowships available for park research

SMN

The Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association has two fellowships available for those who would like to conduct research in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Carlos C. Campbell Memorial and the James T. Tanner Memorial Fellowships are available to fund studies directly related to the park with no limitation to the subject matter. The results of any proposed research are intended to help the natural and human history of the park or to improve the management of the park’s natural and cultural resources. A special emphasis is placed on projects that demonstrate an applied research approach and produce lasting results for conservation of the park’s resources.

An award for the Campbell fellowship consists of a maximum amount of $3,600 per year. Awards may be extended for a longer period if justifiable. Special grants also may be made for unusual needs.

The Tanner fellowship consists of a $10,000 stipend and is intended to support a full-time professional for three months or a graduate student for one year.

Applicants should submit a detailed proposal and vita.

Proposals should be sent by Dec. 20 to: Frank T. van Manen, Chairman; Fellowship Committee, GSMCA; U.S. Geological Survey, Southern Appalachian Field Branch; 274 Ellington Plant Sciences Building; University of Tennessee; Knoxville, Tenn. 37996. The executive committee of the association selects recipients for both fellowships. New awards are granted in January of each year. Contact UT for more specific information about applying.
