Birds:

With the fronts passing through the area, Bob Olthoff and I decided to check out area lakes for migrating waterfowl last Sunday, Nov. 17. Our first stop, Lake Junaluska, was encouraging, but, regrettably, it turned out to be the highlight of the day.

° Hooded mergansers (50 or so), ring-necked duck, gadwall, green-winged teal, ruddy duck, bufflehead, double-crested cormorant, pied-billed grebe, greater yellowlegs, ring-billed gull and Bonaparte’s gull (Lake Junaluska)

° Great blue heron, belted kingfisher, double-crested cormorant and lesser scaup (Lake Julian, in Asheville)

° Pied-billed grebe and ring-necked duck (Lake Oceola, in Hendersonville)

° Great blue heron, wood duck and green-winged teal (Four Seasons Marsh, in Hendersonville)

Other birds of note reported from the area recently include:

° Red-necked grebe (South Holston Lake, near Bristol, TN, 11/17, reported from Tennessee Birds listserv)

° Greater white-fronted goose (11/12) and canvasback (11/16, both from water treatment pond along Hwy 191 in Henderson County)
