Nativity scene modified

SMN

Members of the Streets of Franklin committee bowed to ACLU demands this week and added secular symbols to a courthouse nativity scene.

The Macon County commissioners last week supported keeping the nativity scene at the courthouse in downtown Franklin, but attorney Richard Jones told commissioners that last year’s display did not have any secular symbols and had prompted the letter from the ACLU.

Streets of Franklin members had discussed moving the display to a private business so that it could remain purely religious. County commissioners, however, said they would like the nativity scene to remain at the courthouse. With those instructions, the committee altered the scene and brought it into compliance with court interpretations of the First Amendment.
