| << Back 11/27/02 Lindsay eyes cash, hopes road issue is settled By Don Hendershot Genevieve Lindsay has worked for Swain County, in some capacity for the past 30 years. The two-term Register of Deeds decided to throw her hat in the commissioners ring this year, and was elected. There were a number of people supporting me and urging me to run, but it was a struggle to make that commitment, Lindsay said. I knew that if I won, I would work hard to do the best job for the county. I have a great love and appreciation for Swain County and I feel I can use my experience to help create a better quality of life. She said shes heard all the horror stories about public life: the long hours, the never ending phone calls. But as a recent retiree, she will have the time to be a full-time commissioner. There are many challenges out there, but I feel good about the enthusiasm of the other board members and know we are, all, ready to work hard for the county. One of those problems in Swain County is unemployment and the lack of good jobs. All of us would like to see that situation improve, she said. Too many of our young people have to leave to find employment. I would like to find ways to keep those who want to stay in the community. Lindsay said she believes the county has a solid educational program and that she will work to maintain it. She also wants to make sure the citizens of the county receive the best possible services. If there is one dream the lifetime resident of Swain County carries into office, it would be a final settlement to the North Shore Road issue. According to Lindsay, thats not a new dream for elected officials in Swain County. Every set of commissioners, since Ive been involved with the county has struggled to resolve this issue. I hope this board can work together to find a final resolution, Lindsay said. As she posed for a photo along the Tuckasegee at the Swain administration building, she expressed her support of a cash settlement in lieu of the North Shore Road. You know, there hasnt been a road built yet, and I just cant see one being built. Lindsay and the rest of the incoming Swain County commissioners will be sworn in at a public ceremony, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. in the Commissioners Conference Room of the Swain County Administration Building. An organizational meeting will follow immediately. |
