| << Back 11/4/09 ‘Building Small’ features folk art buildings SMN The North Carolina Arboretum will host “Building Small: American Folk Art Houses and Structures” from the collection of Steven Burke and Randy Campbell, opening Nov. 14 at the Baker Exhibit Center. A magical gathering of American folk art buildings reveals much about culture, clever craftsmanship, and our architectural history. Houses and churches, Ferris wheels and factories, castles and carousels – over 200 structures from the country’s largest collection made largely by anonymous persons from about 1890 until about 1950. The visually rich temporary exhibit, loaned by North Carolinians Steven Burke and Randy Campbell, shows the remarkable imagination with which Americans have rendered small the places of their community, history, or personal vision. The exhibit runs through Jan. 3 at The Baker Exhibit Center. The exhibit is free for N.C. Arboretum Society members or with the parking fee. The Baker Exhibit Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Parking is always free for N.C. Arboretum Society members. School group programs are available for a fee and must pre-register. Exhibit support is provided by community partner Smoky Mountain Living Magazine and education partner Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.
