| << Back 11/18/09 Have more patience with President Obama SMN To the Editor: There are some that question Obama’s ability to bring change to this country. Patience is a virtue. How can we really expect a sweeping change within nine months to habits and a psyche that have taken decades to solidify? Obama ran on three premises: to provide low cost or free health care for all; to move away from polluting and foreign energy sources; to end these vicious wars. In addition, many forget that he inherited a fiscal mess that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. Health care reform is on the brink of being a reality. A reforming energy bill has already passed through the House. Despite the Senate’s sluggishness, green energy bills are passing through the states. The economy has stabilized, though the prospects of going back to the previous economic bubble are slim (thank goodness). We are in good standing with the rest of the world and there is hope for a more peaceful coexistence with somewhat aggressive nations. In the nine months Obama has been in power, that’s quite an accomplishment. Change has already begun. No matter what side of the field you are on, it’s time to stop playing games with people’s lives. Any step towards providing more families with health insurance and continuous coverage is positive. Ultimately, the healthcare issue pales in comparison to the health of the planet — a threat that is just around the corner. Until we stop worrying about what’s in it for me, sustainability — be it health care, environmental or world peace — is a continuous battle. However, the battle represents an evolutionary leap forward for this country and humanity. Therefore, the real question is this: do we want to be on the leading edge or do we prefer playing catch up?
