SMN

Sylva Mayor Brenda Oliver was elected to the National League of Cities Board of Directors during its annual business meeting held recently in Atlanta.

The board consists of 40 mayors, councilmen and state league directors from across the nation.

The League develops an agenda of priority issues for local governments. At its recent meeting, nearly 4,000 local government officials set an agenda for 2002 that focuses on homeland security, racism, youth education, families and federal policies that will help local government build strong communities.

Oliver has served for four years on the NLC Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Policy Committee. She has been mayor of Sylva since 1992, has held several positions with the N.C. League of Municipalities and was on the 2000-2001 General Assembly Tax Policy Study Commission.
