Birds:

° Common loon, Bonaparte’s gull, ring-billed gull, ruddy duck, scaup spp. and northern pintail (Lake Julian in Asheville, reported from Carolina Birds listserv 11/26)

° American wigeon, ring-necked duck (Cashiers Lake 11/27, Don Hendershot)

° Rufous hummer (Ann Kirby reported the rufous hummer was still present on Thanksgiving, to see this bird contact Ann @ 828.452.3164)

° Horned grebe, kildeer, ring-billed gull, Bonaparte’s gull, great blue heron, ring-necked duck, ruddy duck, hooded merganser, red-breasted merganser, bufflehead, redhead, wood duck, gadwall, belted kingfisher and rusty blackbird (a compilation of some of the species seen at Lake Junaluska over the past week from Carolina Field Birders listserv, personal conservation and observation)

Some rare vagrants have been reported from Tennesse, within 2-3 hours drive time; Western and/or Clark’s grebe from Tellico Lake, near Maryville and a snow bunting near Musick’s Campground on South Holston Lake outside of Bristol. Both reported from Tennesse Birds listserv.


Still waiting to hear from any feeder watchers reporting any winter finches or other sightings of note. Purple finches should be here any day, they have been reported from Knoxville.
