Elk in the Smokies: a timeline

SMN

Mid-1700s --Elk were abundant prior to European settlement but declined rapidly.

Late 1700s -- last elk killed in North Carolina.

Mid-1800s, last elk killed in Tennessee.

November 1990 -- GSMNP, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and state wildlife agencies discuss the possibility of elk relocation.

1996 -- Assesment of elk habitat in GSMNP.

August 1997 -- GSMNP gathers information on feasibility of elk release.

October 2000 -- “Finding of no significant impact” from elk study clears way for release in Cataloochee Valley.

Jan. 22-24 -- 26 elk captured from Land Between the Lakes, Ken.

Feb. 1 -- Elk transported from LBL to Cataloochee and released into holding pen.

April -- Planned elk release from holding pen into the park.
