What may be affected by budget cuts

SMN

• Eliminate Mountain Heritage Center, Mountain Resource Center, WNC Tomorrow, Local Government Training, Highlands Biological Station, Mountain Aquaculture Center, Summer Ventures in Math and Science, summer residential legislators schools, cut by 300 number of participants in N.C. Center for Advancement of Teaching programs, Rural Education Program.
• Several other programs will be reduced by significant amounts.
• 50 to 60 jobs
• $3.47 million

WNC Tomorrow is among agencies that may be eliminated. Recent accomplishments:
• Sponsored Governor’s Air Quality Summit and created Mountain Air Quality Coalition. These early efforts helped lead to clean air legislation currently working its way through the General Assembly.
• Helped attain $500,000 for revitalization of downtown Bryson City.
• Coordinated Mountain Area Legislative Conference, which continues to identify legislative priorities for WNC.
• Organized Clear-water contractor program, which trained contractors on existing sedimentation laws.
• Helped Haywood County organize its Haywood Tomorrow Visioning Program.
• Hosted Meg Scott Phipps, new state agriculture secretary, to WNC where she visited Yellow Creek Botanical Institute and learned about alternative crops that are being grown here.
• Facilitated Haywood County visioning process.
