Macon County commissioners decided Monday to impose a hiring freeze and discontinue payment of certain travel expenditures as a result of the state budget crisis.

The board’s vote follows County Manager Sam Greenwood’s recommendations. No new employees will be hired, and all vacant positions will remain unfilled, Greenwood said. Over-night travel, equipment and non-essential supplies will only be purchased with Greenwood’s OK.

State mandated increases and the state’s reimbursement withholding could take $650,000 from Macon County. That would equal a 2-cent property tax increase.
