Haywood does not need an extravagant courthouse

To the editor:

No matter how much we need a justice center in Haywood County, the central, critical, question is: what can we afford? It’s such a reasonable question that it seemingly has escaped notice. Who of us would walk into a store to buy something we need without knowing how much money we have? And perhaps another silly question, but is the county already meeting its current obligations? And aren’t we wondering if the woman who said her son didn’t have books enough from school to do his homework was being accurate (recently reported in a local newspaper). I never knew a person with plumbing problems who charged off to the Cadillac dealership instead. Is this really the leadership we deserve? Is this leadership? Isn’t this, quite simply, flagrant irresponsibility. It is time for this community to turn aside the choices offered by the Republican and Democratic parties. It is time for a new direction.
