Some incumbents lose Cherokee primary

Enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians went to the polls Thursday, June 7, to cast their vote in primary elections for all 12 Tribal Council seats and to elect school board members from Big Cove, Birdtown and Wolfetown.

School board winners were: Birdtown — Nancy “Jim” Taylor with 230 votes; Wolfetown — Kathi S. Littlejohn with 168 votes; and Katherine S. Wolfe was unopposed in Big Cove Community.

The top four vote-getters from each community in the Tribal Council primary will vie in the general election in September, with the top two being sworn in. Results in last Thursday’s Tribal Council primary:

° Birdtown — Winners were incumbents Dan McCoy (187) and Jim Owle (168). Sandy Maples Bradley was third (160) and Albert Crowe fourth (154)

° Wolfetown — Winners were Larry Blythe (206) and Dwayne Jackson (121). Incumbent Carroll Parker was third (111) and Robert Ewell Long fourth (79)

° Yellowhill (three candidates entered) — Winners were incumbents Bob Blankenship (112) and Alan “B” Ensley (102). Richard Welch was third (82).

° Big Cove — Winners were Richard Panther (119) and Francine Watty (76). Coming in third was Jack Lossiah (67) and fourth was incumbent Teresa Bradley-McCoy (63).

° Paintown — Winners were incumbent Tommye Saunooke (196) George V. Sneed Sr. (128). Coming in third was incumbent Marie L. Junaluska (114) and fourth was Dennis Edward Taylor (59).

° Snowbird — Winners were incumbents Glenda Sanders (175) and Brenda Long-Norville (134). Coming in third was Abe Wachacha (100) and fourth was Jim Bowman (84).
