Paxar to close Canton clothing label plant

SMN

Clothing label manufacturer Paxar is closing its Canton plant and eliminating 84 jobs.

Paxar bought its current building from American Silk Label in 1995. Employees of the company, which once employed as many as 150 at its Haywood plant, were notified of the closure Friday (June 22).
Paxar is actually outside the Canton town limits on Interstate 40. Employees said they expected the closure but did not know when it was going to happen.

Paxar officials say they are consolidating manufacturing to a Hillville, Va., plant. Layoffs began about five months ago and final plant closure should occur sometime in mid-October.

I-40 detour to Canton going smoothly
No problems.

That’s the word so far as the Department of Transportation routes Interstate 40 traffic through Canton while it constructs a truck-climbing lane in the eastbound lane between exits 31 and 37.

The detour started last week and is expected to last until Christmas. Blasting along the eastbound lane is expected to take place from 9 a.m.-noon Mondays through Thursday. That’s when the detour - U.S. 19-23, Champion Drive and Blackwell Drive - will be used.

“It’s not been a problem so far,” said Pam James, who works in the Canton Papertown office in the downtown area. “I haven’t seen any back-ups.”

Police say they will monitor speed limits closely. Larger speed limit signs along with speed boards that display the speed of approaching vehicles are also going up. Police say a couple of minor accidents have occurred already.
