the House Public Utilities Committee.
The North Carolina Clean Air Coalition has organized a campaign-style
barnstorming tour of the eastern and central parts of North Carolina
in an effort to raise a groundswell of public support for the Clean
Smokestacks Act.
The Canary Coalition, a Jackson County-based clean air advocacy group,
is working with other organizations statewide to pass the Clean Smokestacks
Act in the NC state legislature. Gov. Mike Easley has indicated that
hell sign the bill into law if it reaches his desk.
The tour is being organized, according to Canary Coalition Director
Avram Friedman, to convince the House of Representatives to move on
the legislation. The Clean Smokestacks Express will take
place July 12-17. It will consist of a caravan of cars and bicycles
travelling to Raleigh, stopping for rallies in New Bern, Jacksonville,
Wilmington, Fayetteville, Charlotte, Salisbury, Winston-Salem, Greensboro,
Burlington, Chapel Hill, Durham and ending in Raleigh for a large rally
and lobby day at the legislative office building.
