Homecoming
Atlanta Ballet returns for 10th year

SMN

The 10th Mountain Homecoming of the Atlanta Ballet will include school performances, an open rehearsal, master classes, a patron party and meet-the-artist gala, and culminate in two performances in the Haywood Community College auditorium.

The summer residency in the mountains has become a mountain tradition, with dancers and ballet company personnel staying in the homes of arts patrons throughout Haywood County. The main performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23. The main performances at HCC will include six selections:

° “Offenbach Suites,” featuring the company’s pre-professional youth dancers.

° Balanchine’s “Tarantella,” which first debuted in 1964.

° “The Unanswered Question,” choreographed by Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director John McFall with music by Charles Ives.

° “Three Preludes” by Ben Stevenson, with music by Rachmaninoff.

° “Le Corsaire,” which debuted in St. Petersburg in 1899 and was originally based on a Lord Byron poem.

° “Streets and Legends” by Colin Connor, with music by Alisdair Fraser and Ashley MacIsaac.
In addition, the ballet, thanks to the help of a grant from the N.C. Arts Council and CP&L, will reach more than 2,700 students with its school programs. This schedule includes:

° Sept. 18 — 9 a.m., Riverbend Elementary; 1:15, Clyde Elementary.

° Sept. 19 — 9 a.m., Junaluska Elementary; 1:45 p.m., Hazelwood Elementary.

° Sept. 20 — Central Haywood High School.

° Sept. 21 — Interactive open rehearsal for all Haywood eighth-graders at 1 p.m. in the HCC auditorium.
