Hike Panthertown? Then help keep the trails up, too

Want to help keep Panthertown Valley beautiful and accessible? Volunteers are needed Saturday, Aug. 20, for a Trail Work Day.

Volunteers will work on Overlook Trail, a popular hiking trail featuring magnificent long-range views of Panthertown, a 6,295-acre backcountry wilderness near Cashiers. Tools are provided and no special skills are needed to participate with Friends of Panthertown on this project.

Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Salt Rock entrance at the end of Breedlove Road, and work is expected to be completed by 2 p.m. Volunteers should bring a lunch, plenty of water and wear good shoes.

Friends of Panthertown is a local nonprofit dedicated to protecting and maintaining Panthertown Valley. The group was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from REI. The money will help support the Panthertown Valley Stewardship Project, a campaign to encourage volunteerism in Panthertown Valley.

The mission of the Friends of Panthertown is to work in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to conserve the quality and experience of recreational opportunities in Panthertown Valley.

At our inception 20 years ago, we chose to be different. Unlike other news organizations, we made the decision to provide in-depth, regional reporting free to anyone who wanted access to it. We don’t plan to change that model. Support from our readers will help us maintain and strengthen the editorial independence that is crucial to our mission to help make Western North Carolina a better place to call home. If you are able, please support The Smoky Mountain News.

The Smoky Mountain News is a wholly private corporation. Reader contributions support the journalistic mission of SMN to remain independent. Your support of SMN does not constitute a charitable donation. If you have a question about contributing to SMN, please contact us.
