Canton bridge work finished ahead of schedule

Traffic headaches caused by bridge work in downtown Canton for the past nine months are now over.

Detour signs were taken down Monday, marking the end of the $3.5 million project to replace the 1920s-era Park Street bridge over the Pigeon River.

“The last of the traffic barrels will be pulled up the first of September,” said John Herrin, project manager with Taylor and Murphy Construction, which performed the bridge work.

The project is finishing nearly three months ahead of schedule.

Downtown Canton has parallel one-way streets: Main and Park. While the Park Street bridge was being rebuilt, a dog-leg detour routed traffic from Park Street over to Main Street, which was reconfigured to handle a single lane of traffic in both directions for a short section.
