New fees tacked on to all-electric cars

out electriccarsThis year all-electric vehicles registered in North Carolina — about 1,600 of them — are required to pay a $100 annual fee in addition to normal registration fees.

State lawmakers imposed the controversial new fee last year. Their theory is that electric vehicle drivers, who don’t buy gasoline, aren’t contributing their fair share to road maintenance, which is funded out of the gas tax.

Hybrid vehicles that use a combination of gasoline and electricity do not have to pay the extra registration fee.
