Monarchs declining as habitat and food source shrinks

out monarchsA multi-media program, Make Way for Monarchs, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. April 19 at the Cradle of Forestry.

Over-wintering populations of monarch butterflies reached a record low this year. Several factors, including excessive or untargeted herbicide use, have combined to reduce the insect’s summer breeding habitat, and loss of winter habitat in Mexico has also played a role. Brevard naturalist and monarch advocate Ina Warren will be the presenter. Free seeds of locally native milkweed given. $5. Located along U.S. 276 four miles south of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
