Birding workshop
“Bird Watching for Beginners” will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Balsam Mountain Inn on the Haywood-Jackson counytline.
The workshop will cover the basics of bird watching, including how to find and identify birds, how to select and use binoculars and field guides, what homeowners can do to attract birds to their yard, and which birds are found in different habitats.
Larry Thompson, the program leader, has taught bird watching courses and led birding field trips for over 30 years and served as the National Audubon Society’s Southeast Regional Vice President for 20 years. Cost is $20.

New birding blog
The Audubon Society of North Carolina launched new blog featuring news dispatches from the front lines of bird conservation, along with photos and videos of birds and other wildlife.
Naturalists and biologists from the mountains to the coast contribute to the site with reports from the field, news about policy issues, and key information about the state’s Important Bird Areas.
“Our goal is to make the blog a vital resource for birders, nature-lovers, and the media,” said Curtis Smalling, IBA coordinator for Audubon North Carolina.
