Ellison to lead reading at Rickman Store

art rickmanWriter and naturalist George Ellison will read from his new collection of poems, Permanent Camp, at the Rickman Store at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.

Ellison is the author of Blue Ridge Nature Journal, Mountain Passages, and the two volume collection High Vistas: An Anthology of Nature Writing from Western North Carolina and the Great Smoky Mountains. He is well known for his weekly columns in The Smoky Mountain News and for his role in the most recent editions of Horace Kephart’s Our Southern Highlanders and Camping and Woodcraft.

Elizabeth Ellison, watercolorist and illustrator of Permanent Camp, and banjo and folklorist extraordinaire Lee Knight, will accompany him. The event is free and open to the public.

Rickman Store is located at 259 Cowee Creek Road, 7 miles north of Franklin, off  N.C. 28.

    out natcornLast week, we set the stage for the 29th annual Great Smoky Mountains Birding Expedition (GSMBE). The group starts at 9 a.m. at George and Elizabeth Ellison’s office/studio in downtown Bryson City. I know, birders out there are rolling their eyes — to start a count at 9 a.m. is like missing half the day, but there are caveats.
