Bluegrass bands to duel in Highlands

art nitrograssThe Highlands Performing Arts Center will present the Bluegrass Duel 8 p.m. on Sept. 15. The event will feature Asheville’s Nitrograss (pictured) and Athen’s Packway Handle.

Both bands will perform a set and then jam together for a third set. Tickets are $25. www.highlandspac.org or 828.526.9047.

    out natcornLast week, we set the stage for the 29th annual Great Smoky Mountains Birding Expedition (GSMBE). The group starts at 9 a.m. at George and Elizabeth Ellison’s office/studio in downtown Bryson City. I know, birders out there are rolling their eyes — to start a count at 9 a.m. is like missing half the day, but there are caveats.
