If you love to run and enjoy the scenic views of the Smoky Mountains, come out on Saturday, April 4, 2019 for a two-race event in Waynesville, N.C. The town will be abuzz with runners of all ages and skill levels.

Asheville-based race producer, Glory Hound Events, has brought back the Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon and is introducing the newly branded Mighty Four Miler, which will support the Riley Howell Foundation Fund.

The Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon originated in May 2015 and was hosted by the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce. They continued the race through 2018. Glory Hound Events took over after a hiatus in 2019. The course is beautiful with a few hilly sections but plenty of flat stretches as well.

“I give credit to Kevin Fitzgerald for bringing back the half marathon,” said Greg Duff, owner and director of Glory Hound Events.  “Kevin is a longtime runner, community member and valuable part of my team. He’s been involved with this race since its inception and suggested taking it on once it transitioned from the Chamber of Commerce. The original four-miler was also his idea, so when the tragedy happened in Charlotte, the decision came easy to not only bring back the half marathon but also the four-miler in Riley's honor.”

Riley Howell is a Waynesville native who was killed on the campus of UNC Charlotte on April 30, 2019 after tackling an active shooter. Howell saved countless lives with this heroic act. The tragedy tore a hole in the heart of his small hometown and the rest of the country.

Riley’s family and friends created the Riley Howell Foundation Fund. The foundation’s website describes their mission in this way: “Riley died as he lived — selflessly, bravely and in service to others. In memory of his courageous act and to honor a remarkable young man, the Riley Howell Foundation Fund supports organizations benefiting families affected by gun violence.”

Riley’s dad, Thomas, is an avid runner and part of the planning team for the Mighty Four Miler. The hope is to continue this event year after year in Riley’s honor and to continue the mission of the foundation.

Duff offers four reasons to come out on Saturday, April 4.

1). Both courses are fun, challenging and well supported.

2). For those outside of Haywood County, the event offers a chance to be part of a strong running community.

3). It is a great opportunity to support the Howell family and raise money for the foundation. While the four-miler is specific to Riley, the entire day is held in his honor.

4). The four-mile course is a great one to walk, so even if you aren't a runner, you can still participate.

Both the Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon and the Mighty Four Miler will start at the metal arch in downtown Waynesville, at the intersection of Main and Depot Streets. The half marathon will kick off at 8 a.m. and the four miler at 8:15 a.m. Both races happening conjointly allows a variety of ability levels to enjoy a day together. Registration for both events is available on the Glory Hound Events website
