Hiker fatality in the Smokies

A hiker on the Abrams Falls Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park died following a cardiac event Monday, June 15. 

Diana Graves, 67, of Chesterfield, Virginia, was hiking with her family when she experienced a cardiac event at 1:09 p.m. about half a mile from the trailhead. Bystanders immediately began CPR, and park rangers continued life-saving efforts after arriving on the scene, including the use of an AED. 

The patient was pronounced dead at 1:43 p.m. Emergency responders with American Medical Response also responded to the scene and transported the deceased to Blount Memorial Hospital.
