Soup and Cornbread canceled, support still needed

Altrusa of Waynesville is part of an International nonprofit organization that emphasizes community service including literacy, education and other needs within Haywood County.

Altrusa proudly supports students of Haywood County through a variety of scholarships for undergraduate students awarding over $209,000 in scholarship funds to assist deserving students in their quest for higher education and certification programs. In addition to awarding new scholarships each year, we are committed to renewing awards of scholarships to students who previously received a scholarship through our annual renewal program.

The primary source of funding for the scholarship awards comes from our annual Soup and Cornbread fundraiser in January every year. Since 1998 Altrusa of Waynesville has hosted this event and successfully raised funds through sponsorships from individuals and businesses that value our efforts and commitment to help local students achieve their education goals.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic conditions, Altrusa will not be able to host the annual fundraiser in January 2021. However, Haywood County seniors will graduate, college applications will be completed, and existing college students will continue their education. We are therefore asking for the continued support of the community to enable us to provide scholarships in the spring of 2021.

There are multiple sponsorship levels: $150, $250, $500 and $1,000. Donations of any amount are welcome as well as sponsorships. To thank our sponsors we will list you on our website donor page as well as in local publications such as Smoky Mountain News, The Mountaineer and The Vicinitus. Your donation will help ensure the success of the future of Haywood County students.

For more information regarding a sponsorship or donation, feel free to call Robbin Brophy at 828-558-4300. You may also mail your donation directly to: Altrusa of Waynesville, PO Box 947, Waynesville, NC 28786-0947.

At our inception 20 years ago, we chose to be different. Unlike other news organizations, we made the decision to provide in-depth, regional reporting free to anyone who wanted access to it. We don’t plan to change that model. Support from our readers will help us maintain and strengthen the editorial independence that is crucial to our mission to help make Western North Carolina a better place to call home. If you are able, please support The Smoky Mountain News.

The Smoky Mountain News is a wholly private corporation. Reader contributions support the journalistic mission of SMN to remain independent. Your support of SMN does not constitute a charitable donation. If you have a question about contributing to SMN, please contact us.
