Man fatally shot overnight in Waynesville

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 12:06 a.m. Monday, May 4, regarding suspicious activity at the entrance to the Shadow Woods subdivision located on Ratcliff Cove Road.  

Moments later, a second 911 call was received where the caller reported hearing a gunshot and reporting someone was shot.  Deputies responded and located a male lying on the side of Ratcliff Cove Road suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. The fatal shooting resulted in the death of Brandon Carter of Canton and the arrest of the suspect, Kevin Michael Carey of Waynesville. The investigation is ongoing as sheriff’s office detectives continue to piece together the sequence of the events.  

Kevin Michael Carey, 18, of Waynesville, has been charged with murder and is being held in the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center under no bond pending a May 26, 2020 court date.
